Health experts say it has been a challenging fall and winter for anyone trying to avoid the flu, COVID-19 and other viruses.

That could make it tempting to turn to immune system supplements and vitamins for help.

But a dietician at Henry Ford Health says a diet rich in fruits and vegetables might do a better job of fighting illness.

The right foods benefit the immune system more than supplements, according to Allegra Picano, registered dietician, Henry Ford Health.

Fruits and vegetables are generally less expensive than supplements and have other benefits, such as increasing your fiber intake, she said

“There’s a reason they’re called supplements,” she said, as they only add to a healthy diet, rather than replace it.

Supplements are generally safe, but can cause unwanted side effects, such as gastrointestinal issues, if they are used excessively. Picano recommends strictly following the directions on the packaging.

It’s also a good idea to check with your doctor before you start taking supplements, as they can interact with prescription medications and with each other.

Health experts have long said that getting enough sleep, exercising and managing stress also play a role in building a healthy immune system.
