A temporary benefit increase for buying fruits and vegetables through a major nutrition aid program for low-income women, infants, and children would become permanent under a proposed agency rule.
The Agriculture Department announced the change Thursday as part of a proposed regulation that would also make a wider variety of fruits and vegetables available under the program. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children is one of the largest nutrition programs the USDA administers, with more than 6 million participants.
