On Thursday, October 13, The Little Gem Preparatory School hosted the First Term Edition of their Healthy Food Exhibition under the theme “Healthy Eating”.
The school is located in Roseau.
The principal, Mrs. Maydinia Defoe alongside three other teachers (Miss Sheryl Stoute, Mrs.Cheryl John, and Miss Darroux) organised the event.
The event was held in Roseau within the PSU compound with a primary focus on fruits and vegetables.
Principal, Maydinia Defoe stated in an interview with DNO that they chose a place that emphasised fruits simply because they wanted to encourage students to gravitate towards healthy eating even at their tender age.
“The ultimate goal of this Health Expo was to raise awareness, especially among the schools, to eat what they grow. Nutrition and Exercise play an integral role in the overall growth and development of the child. They strongly believe in nurturing the cognitive development and exploring creative and artistic ways fruits could be enjoyed as a snack.”
She noted that the parents were tasked to work with their child on an assigned food item and were responsible for designing and decorating the fruits for display.
“Indeed the parents made magic happen as there was an [explosion] of creativity at its best. It was a sight to behold and as we are in the Independence Season the entire booth was decorated to perfection with a splash culture,”
Meanwhile, President of the Little Gem Preparatory Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Ms Yvette Charles stated they wanted to honor one of their own executive members who is a breast cancer survivor.
“The children wore pink with their hair beautifully adorned with pink ribbons to pay homage to our Breast Cancer Survivor/Warrior. We would like to echo that EARLY INTERVENTION SAVES LIVES.”
Jolly’s Pharmacy Professional, Mr Carlton Languedoc.
The children were also honored to have Public Relations Officer of Jolly’s Pharmacy, Carlton Languedoc, present a health talk and give tokens compliments of Jolly’s.
“They were dressed in their sports uniforms as they enthusiastically anticipated the Cardio Jam (Aerobic Sessions),” she added
“The school is eternally grateful to the dynamic PTA [which] is the backbone of the school. A special thanks to Digicel for donating the tent for the event and to everyone who made a meaningful contribution towards the success of this event .”
Charles expressed that it was a major success, and looks forward to bigger and greater things.
